Banking for senior citizens: How ESAF Small Finance Bank is building an age-friendly financial system
Senior citizens are often overlooked in conversations about financial inclusion. The focus tends to fall on the unbanked, the young, or those new to technology, yet older customers face their own distinct and growing set of challenges, particularly as banking moves increasingly online. For GABV member ESAF Small Finance Bank, addressing those challenges is not an afterthought. It is a commitment.
This generation has spent decades contributing to the banking sector through sustained savings behaviour and deposit mobilisation. They have helped build the financial institutions that now serve millions. As banking continues to modernise, ensuring that older customers can continue to access safe, convenient, and dignified financial services is both a practical responsibility and a moral one.
Celebrating wisdom, building inclusion
In recognition of that responsibility, ESAF Small Finance Bank observed ESAF Vayojyoti 2026, "Celebrating the Wisdom of Senior Citizens", from 21 August to 21 September 2026. The month-long initiative brought together a range of community and branch-level activities designed to engage, support, and celebrate senior customers across the bank's network, reaching around 3,500 senior citizen customers in total.
Activities included Snehasparsh, a programme of visits to old-age homes, the formation of Silver Circle Clubs for senior citizens, and special engagement events for older customers at branch level. The initiative also promoted awareness of healthy and active ageing, covering physical activity, balanced nutrition, social connection, and regular health management, recognising that financial wellbeing and personal wellbeing are deeply connected.
Making banking accessible
A central focus of the initiative was making banking genuinely accessible to older customers. Senior Citizen Facilitation Desks have been established across ESAF branches, offering personalised assistance with mobile banking, UPI registration, nomination updates, KYC processes, and other everyday banking needs. Staff were encouraged to provide attentive, patient support, ensuring that older customers could use banking services with confidence rather than anxiety.

Where customers were unable to visit branches, the bank extended outreach and assistance directly to them, a practical expression of the principle that inclusive banking means meeting people where they are, not where the system finds it convenient.
Protecting seniors from financial fraud
Access to banking without protection from fraud is not access at all. ESAF Vayojyoti 2026 placed significant emphasis on financial awareness and security, with dedicated sessions covering safe banking practices, OTP scams, UPI safety, digital fraud prevention, and retirement-related financial planning. In an environment where older customers are increasingly targeted by sophisticated financial scams, building awareness and confidence is as important as building access.
Through ESAF Vayojyoti 2026, ESAF Small Finance Bank brought together financial inclusion, accessible banking, financial literacy, and community engagement into one initiative, showing that responsible banking means serving every customer with care, at every stage of life.
