Purpose Led Finance: Building Resilient Rural Livelihoods through ESAF Small Finance Bank’s Micro-Layer Project
For small and marginal farmers, a sustainable livelihood depends on more than access to credit. It requires viable income opportunities, reliable market access, and the support needed to turn small-scale economic activity into a more secure future. ESAF Small Finance Bank’s Micro-Layer Project seeks to address these interconnected challenges by bringing finance, technical expertise, and market access together in a single livelihood model.
Rajashree: A home-maker turned poultry entrepreneur, Rajashree now supplies 750-800 eggs daily through ESAF Small Finance Bank’s Micro-Layer Project.
Piloted in partnership with Nenmara Farmer Producer Organisation (FPO) in Palakkad, Kerala, the initiative enables farmers to establish compact poultry layer units on limited landholdings. Each unit accommodates 1,025 brown layer birds, supported by veterinary services, feed and nutrition management, technical guidance, and a structured buy-back arrangement facilitated through the FPO.
The project reflects a broader approach to financial inclusion: enabling rural households to participate in productive economic activity, strengthen their income security, and build greater resilience to financial uncertainty. By linking individual farmers with collective institutions and market opportunities, the model also supports local entrepreneurship and strengthens rural value chains.
With an estimated investment of ₹7.94 lakh per unit, the initiative illustrates how financial services can extend beyond lending to help create the conditions for sustainable livelihoods.
Through this integrated approach, ESAF seeks to demonstrate how banking rooted in community needs can support economic participation, strengthen local institutions, and contribute to more inclusive and resilient rural development.
Sumavali: Through ESAF Small Finance Bank’s Micro-Layer Project, home-maker Sumavali has built a sustainable livelihood, supplying 750-800 eggs daily and strengthening her household income.
Ultimately, the Micro-Layer Project reflects a fundamental principle of values-based banking: finance is most meaningful when it creates opportunities for people to build secure and dignified livelihoods. By connecting rural entrepreneurs with the resources, expertise, and markets they need to grow, ESAF is helping strengthen the foundations of rural prosperity—where financial inclusion becomes a pathway to economic independence, community resilience, and a more equitable future.
