Opportunity Bank Uganda Celebrates 30th Anniversary

15 August, 2025. Kampala, Uganda. Opportunity Bank Uganda proudly celebrates 30 years of transforming lives through inclusive finance, digital innovation, and a commitment to dignity and opportunity for all.

Founded in 1995 as a small microcredit initiative, the Bank has grown into a fully licensed Tier II Credit Institution serving more than 520,000 customers nationwide. From its first branch in Namirembe to a network of 25 branches across Uganda, Opportunity Bank has become a trusted partner for individuals, families, and businesses often excluded from mainstream banking.

At its 30th Anniversary Dinner held at Mestil Hotel, Kampala, the Bank welcomed distinguished guests including leaders from the Bank of Uganda, Opportunity International, development partners, long-serving staff, and clients who have shaped its journey.

Marking this milestone, Opportunity Bank also opened its 25th branch in Rwamwanja Refugee Settlement, home to more than 110,000 refugees. This is the Bank’s second branch in a refugee-hosting area, extending specialized financial services, digital banking, and financial literacy to both refugees and host communities.

“From refugees rebuilding their lives to women leading small businesses, from rural schools to persons with disabilities—we exist for the people who have been told ‘no’ too many times. We are proud to be their ‘yes,’” said Owen Amanya, CEO of Opportunity Bank Uganda.

Over three decades, the Bank has supported more than 21,000 smallholder farmers, 19,000 refugees, 40,000 persons with disabilities, and 1,500 schools, while maintaining UGX 175 billion in savings and a UGX 165 billion loan portfolio. With 520 agent bankers and digital platforms such as the Opportunity Mobile App, it continues to bring modern, accessible services to underserved communities.

As it celebrates this milestone, Opportunity Bank extends its gratitude to partners, clients, and stakeholders for standing alongside its mission of building a more inclusive financial future for Uganda.
